The painting of Dr. Berlanda, expert of the court of Milan, is attributed to the painter Andrea Pozzo (Trent 1642-Vienna 1709).
Although Pozzo never signed his works, both historical as well as stylistic evidence support the attribution.
One hypothesis suggests that a priest who wanted to adorn the crypt with an icon of St Sebastian brought the painting to Novello. However the scenic background of the martyrdom scene could suggest the work of earlier sixteenth century Venetian artists, such as Tintoretto. The color and the forms of vegetation, the anatomical gracefulness of the figures, as well as the sensuality and abandon of the scene indicates the Baroque style on which Pozzo left his indelible mark.
